Self-directed support options – overview

In April 2014 there were new arrangements made for when Councils help you organise support.

The aim is to give people more choice and make it easier to get the support you need.

This is called Self-directed support.

Self-directed support lets you organise the support in the way that works best for you.

  • You can get the Council to organise everything.
  • You can get the Council to give you the money and then you arrange and pay for the services. This is called a Direct Payment.
  • There are a couple of other options that are part-way between these 2 arrangements.
  • This website explains how the options work.

You can choose the way to organise support that is right for you. You can change your mind later if you would like to.

If you are not getting support organised through the Council and arranging things yourself, you don’t have to bother about choosing a Self-directed support option.

All the other parts of planning what you want to achieve and finding support that is right for you will help you get the support that is right for you.
